| 520 | |a Jazz musician Isaac "Redd" Holt was born in Rosedale, Mississippi on May 16, 1932. Holt purchased his first drum set as a sophomore at Crane Technical High School in Chicago. After graduating in 1951, he attended the Cosmopolitan School of Music. Between 1954 and 1966, Holt was part of the original Ramsey Lewis Trio. With the trio, he created such hit singles as Hang on Sloopy and In Crowd. He was co-founder and leader of Young-Holt Unlimited from 1966 to 1974 and created another hit, Soulful Strut. Beginning in 1974, he was head of the group Redd Holt Unlimited. He continued to perform before audiences in venues around the world. As a jazz educator, Holt was active for many years in Chicago's Urban Gateways., a nonprofit organization that provides multicultural performing, visual, and literary arts programs for the community. He founded the Gumption Performing Artists Workshop. Holt received numerous awards for his work. | ||
