Summary:Choreographer and dancer Darlene Blackburn was born on July 12, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from high school, Blackburn established The Darlene Blackburn Dance Troupe in 1963. She later earned her bachelor's and master's degrees. Inspired to study ethnic dance by Margaret Burroughs, Blackburn traveled to Jamaica in 1967, where she studied with the Jamaica National Dance Company. She also studied dance techniques in Africa. She served as artist-in-residence at several universities, including Purdue University and the University of Calabar in Nigeria. Blackburn's dance troupe was active with Urban Gateways, and she worked as a dance instructor at numerous schools and institutions in Chicago. She served as choreographer for productions of Benito Cereno at the Goodman Theatre and The Lion and the Jewel at the University of Chicago. Blackburn received the Outstanding Achievement in Dance award from Ladies of Distinction and the Alyo Award from the Muntu Theatre of Chicago.
