Summary:Athlete and coach William Maurice Bennett was born on October 15, 1915 in Richmond, Virginia. In 1936, he graduated from I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he set a state record for the 440-yard dash. Bennett earned his B.S. degree in 1941 from Virginia State University. Bennett won two CIAA track championships and was selected to play in the College All-Star game against the Chicago Bears. He served in the U.S. military until 1945, then earned his M.A. degree from Columbia University in 1946. From 1946 until 1953, he worked as a biology teacher and football coach at Phenix High School in Hampton, Virginia; and, from 1953 to 1983, was head football and track coach at Virginia State University. Bennett coached nearly fifty All-Americans, winning twelve championships. He was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame in 1982. Bennett passed away on June 7, 2007 at the age of ninety-one.
