Summary:Corporate executive and state assistant attorney general Juanita Powell Baranco was born on March 19, 1949 in Washington, D.C. She received both her B.S. degree and her J.D. degree from Louisiana State University. Baranco had a successful career in law before becoming the assistant attorney general for the State of Georgia. She served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Baranco Automotive Group, which included Mercedes-Benz and Acura dealerships with annual sales reaching $100 million dollars. It was among the first African American-owned car dealerships in the Atlanta area. Baranco served as a member of the Georgia State Board of Education. Governor Zell Miller appointed her to the Board of Regents, where she became the first African American women to chair the board. She served on the Board of Trustees of Clark Atlanta University as well as on the Board of Directors of Georgia Power Company.
