The late Canadian poet A.M. Klein may be of interest to teachers of the modernists for similarities and distinctions in his work from those of Pound and Eliot. Klein dallies with fragmentation like Eliot; he attempted the long epic in "Out of the Pulver and the Polished Lens," a narrative that echoes Pound, although his subject is Spinoza. Klein's own struggle with religion parallels Spinoza's longing for oneness out of the many. Pollock, who edited Klein's poetry, attempts here to chronicle Klein's religious concerns: his skepticism of tradition, which falls away in the face of the Holocaust. A major part of this study is on Klein's rewriting of the Psalms. As a champion of Klein's works, Pollock may entice scholars to take another look at Klein's career and the Psalms in particular, since the work had been reviewed negatively by Randall Jarrell when it first appeared.
