The function of biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems has been extensively studied, with ecology and politics combining to guide management as well as policy decisions regarding these systems. However, because of technological and monetary constraints, the amount of attention given to marine systems is very small, especially considering the scope and size of the marine environment. Here, experts in the field of marine diversity and function have provided insight into prior research in this area. Contributions in the book's 15 chapters include discussions on defining biodiversity and ecosystems in marine environments, the frequent blurring of policy and science in the eye of the public, and steps to take to safeguard marine diversity. Though written at a level that is understandable for a wide audience, this title is most appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students in marine ecology as well as researchers in related fields.
