Tarikhi, a remote sensing expert with the Iranian Space Agency, served on various UN space panels and was involved in international cooperation incentives. When he was transferred to the remote Mahdasht satellite receiving site, he used his free time to study, conduct research, and write this book. He describes how Iran became the ninth nation to make and launch its own satellites, and he places in perspective Iran's goal to launch a manned mission to the moon by 2025. Topics covered include the history of Iranian aeronautics from the earliest times through the formation of the Iranian Air Force and the national airline; Iran's policy-making entities and its aerospace companies; and the country's space research and services, domestic spacecraft, and launch vehicles. The author does not shy away from describing the effects of the revolution on aerospace activities and the subsequent problems with the new entrenched bureaucracy. The book concludes with two short, insightful chapters: "Space Plans: Ambitions, Short-sightedness and Paranoia" and "Breaching the Principles and Ethical Crisis" (including subsections titled "Misuses and Deceit" and "Insolence and Disgrace"). This book fills a gap in the space program literature, providing a rare inside look at Iran's space program and its plans and capabilities. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All academic, general, and professional audiences. --Alvin M. Strauss, Vanderbilt University
