A la fois romancier, essayiste et critique, il a publié vingt-sept livres inclassables à ce jour. Il participe, avec sa femme Catherine Millet, à la fondation de la revue artpress, dont il est le directeur littéraire depuis plus de quarante ans. Cet essai, qui est le premier à lui être consacré, interroge plus particulièrement l'un des grands thèmes de sa pensée : que peuvent les images ? Au début était-il le Verbe ou l'image ? Pourquoi tant d'iconoclasmes à travers les âges ? De quoi cela est-il le symptôme ? Doit-on adorer les images ou les haïr ? Personne, en France, n'a autant ni mieux creusé ces questions qu'on pourrait presque qualifier de théologiques. Deux chapitres de son essai Le Roman et le sacré, "L'image entraîneuse " " Le texte vaurien ", commençaient de répondre à ces interrogations.
