Summary:My dissertation explores the contribution of commensal bacteria to retroviral transmission and pathogenesis. I have found that commensal bacteria do not contribute to the anti-retroviral humoral response. In addition, I have found that a enveloped retrovirus exploits the host membrane proteins, CD14, LBP, MD2, and TLR4 to bind commensal LPS and subvert the antiviral immune response. Finally, I have found that commensal bacteria are required for retrovirally-induced leukemia.
