Summary:How is knowledge to be treated and organized? How are new discoveries to be integrated with understanding that has already been acquired? How is theory to be articulated with practice? This volume collects nine studies that reveal the responses given to those questions by certain ancient texts. Throughout all of antiquity and up to the Byzantine period, these studies show the intersections between science and philosophy. They explore the problem--still a current one--that may be designated by the term "Wissensbewältigung:" the labor of knowledge. The following topics figure prominently in these studies: mathematics, medicine, and astrology; cosmology, geography, and biology; the reception and the criticism of science.
