A welcome companion volume to William's The Welsh Cistercians (Caldey Island, Tenby, 1984) and to his other contributions to the story of monasticism. An introductory essay provides the historical setting for Cistercian monasticism in Christendom as well as in Wales. The meat of the book is the collection of maps, plans, and plates of Welsh Cistercian sites, together with an inventory, house by house, of the lands and other economic resources (such as mills, mines, and fisheries) of each Welsh Cistercian abbey. This marriage geography and history belongs in all serious library collections on monasticism. -A. C. Reeves, Ohio University
