Description
Summary:Among the many epigraphic texts from Iasos, the honorific decrees of the late classical and Hellenistic period stand out because of their number (over 100) and the rich information that they contain. They have long been the object of scholarly interest, but their usefulness for historical purposes has been limited by uncertainty in their dating. This book, based on first-hand examination of the stones, aims to establish a chronology of the decrees that is as exact as possible. For this purpose, the author has developed a method of systematic analysis that takes into account many different aspects of the decrees, including their formulas, writing styles, linguistic character, prosopographic information, and archaeological history. A detailed assessment of the evidence allows the author to propose a relative chronology for the decrees that can be anchored, thanks to some information contained in the texts, to an absolute chronology. The chronological ordering of the texts provides us with new insight into the political life of Iasos, its institutions, and their transformation over time.
