An exhaustive synthesis of the history of the Ice Ages in the northern half of North America, this volume is based upon more than a half-century of work by scores of geologists, geographers, paleobiologists, and other natural scientists. It is, therefore, the finest available statement of this complex, sometimes controversial, subject, essential for a full understanding of the present-day landscape and human use of its resources. The extensive nature of the work, profusely illustrated, with its comprehensive bibliography and outside review by leading experts, makes it the ultimate reference. Fulton's editorship is a model of its kind. The book is divided into three major parts: a regional section of six chapters; an applied section, which includes terrain geochemistry, Quaternary resources, and the influence of Quaternary geology on the human environment; and a final section of Greenland. The five large multicolored maps, lavishly produced, are packaged in a separate case. The seemingly high price actually represents a massive subsidy by the Canadian federal government. An essential reference for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and specialists. -J. D. Ives, University of California, Davis
