This book is an essential resource for both teacher educators and practitioners because it synthesizes the research on best practices in writing instruction and then describes how such practices would play out in individual classrooms. The editors provide a research overview and introduction. Chapters submitted by topic specialists describe instruction for various populations and aspects of writing. There are chapters on teaching young children, adolescents, special learners, and multilingual learners. There are also chapters providing detailed descriptions of how to teach planning, revision, sentence construction, and spelling, as well as how to promote motivation and make use of the Internet. A thoughtful discussion on the nature of writing and thinking frames a chapter describing writing across the curriculum at the high school level. This would make an excellent text for master's-level writing instruction courses. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students, faculty, and practitioners. I. Rosenthal The College of St. Rose
